October 2014 Recap"A Day at Punahou" Photo Sampling:
Feedback from our small group sessions from Junior School Professional Development DayOctober Question of the Month:
Cite concrete examples—a major event, achievement, crises, and/or challenges—where the character of the school community clearly showed itself.
In September 2014, the unexpected death of Academy English teacher, Dan Mindich, though tragic, galvanized and highlighted Punahou's close-knit community. The school quickly responded to student needs by providing counseling assistance to Mindich's students and Senior Advisory. Faculty and students found support and solace in each other, sparking conversations and memory-sharing in and out of the classroom, in the form of stories and written remembrances, both in print and via social media. A page enlisting volunteer help to the family was established and the spaces quickly filled. While Dan's absence is profoundly felt--he was such a great friend, colleague, and community leader--it's heartening that we, as a school, were able to express our love for Dan to his grieving family and share our sadness together. There's some silver lining in this loss. Submitted by Lara Cowell |
